Why is this the #1 Tool I Would Never Teach Without??
1. Every year I create a self-managing classroom. I shouldn't say I, I should say "we" create this together as a class. I facilitate, or guide my class towards certain key goals, but, other than that they decide how we are going to treat one another.
2. Students have a say in their own classroom from day one. Buy-in is important towards motivation. If you want your students to do more and do better than ask them to "help" you create the product. They instantly want it to work because they put so much into the development.
3. This jump starts a positive classroom environment where children feel safe, accepted, and are then open to learn to the fullest!
4. We establish the rules together, we discuss what is acceptable and what is not acceptable, and finally we attach clear consequences that are consistent and understood by everyone.
5. The class then functions with silent hand signals that communicate the same thing to one and all. We help each other be the best "us" we can possibly be.
6. This is the best way I have found to build classroom community and put us all on the same team. Year after year I watch my kids encourage one another, build each other up, hold each other accountable to learning and being the best students they can be.
7. I can not stress this one enough: it takes a HUGE amount of the work from you and disperses it out to everyone in the class.
8. It teaches the kids to be positive towards one another, why that is important, and they reap the benefits of that positivity day after day.
9. Peer pressure is a powerful thing- turn it into your advantage by facilitating and encouraging positive peer pressure in the room. We hold each other accountable, it is not just my job, it is everyone's job!!
10. Easily create consistent standards of order in the classroom. This "social contract" is a document that we pledge to, refer to regularly throughout our day together, and proudly display in the room. It is highlighted as the #1 thing in the room before anything else!!
